CROWNE PLAZA JOINS CANBERRA HALF IRONMAN

The Crowne Plaza Canberra, one of the city’s best hotels, will provide the backdrop for the 2009 Crowne Plaza Canberra Half Ironman on December 13th.

Race Director Graeme Hannan says entries are already solid for the ninth annual event, judged by many as the ultimate test and Half Ironman challenge in Australia. The race is open to all, and well attended by Elites, open and age group triathletes and many teams from corporate, club and family backgrounds.

“We have excellent support from Crowne Plaza Canberra, and as this race heads to its tenth anniversary the return to the Crowne Plaza Canberra is warmly welcomed. We are also excited about the new relationship. It’s a great combination and it will open up a whole new experience for many competitors.”

A race office will be based at Crowne Plaza Canberra up to the weekend, with Registration and bike check-in at the Rond Terraces, just ‘down the road’ from the Hotel, on the Saturday pre race.

“It is great to have such solid Crowne Plaza Canberra support for this race and we know competitors will welcome the comfort and the service of this great property. Add in a really early breakfast before racing, highly competitive room pricing and an aid station run by Crowne Plaza staff and suddenly the race experience is all the richer.”

Matt Young, the Hotels General Manager, and first time competitor in this years event added “We are delighted to be involved with the event this year. Crowne Plaza Canberra is no stranger to accommodating and catering for high profile sporting events, demonstrated again recently as being the Official Hotel for the UCI 2009 World Mountain Bike and Trials. Add this to our regular involvement with the ARU, NRL and AFL and competitors staying at Crowne Plaza Canberra can rest assured they will have all the support they need to put in a great effort on race day!”

Whilst the Crowne Plaza is the home of the Crowne Plaza Canberra Half Ironman in 2009, the race course will follow traditional lines, with the 1.9km Aqua Shop swim based in Lake Burley Griffin, off Commonwealth Park, The 93km Enervit bike course set around Canberra on good but undulating roads, freeways and out into the ACT countryside and return over three-laps and the race culminates in a 21kms two-lap Newtons run alongside the city CBD in the Commonwealth Parklands, taking in the brand new Captain Cook walking track!.

Competitors in the Crowne Plaza Canberra Half Ironman will be looking to validate entries into the Ironman Australia triathlon next March; and to score points in the Australian Half Ironman series.

And running conjointly with the Half Ironman is Round Two of the Ultimate Aussie Team Challenge; with two and three person teams drawn from around the ACT and NSW

The Crowne Plaza Canberra Half Ironman weekend is expected to pull some 1500 adventurous and athletic visitors to Australia’s capital. Competitors traditionally come from all over Australia, with some from overseas.

Entries are already open, with the first 250 entries receiving a Tully Cycling Jersey. Race day for the Crowne Plaza Canberra Half Ironman is December 13th.

The race will feature just under 1000 competitors, but will also see a team of around 250 people involved with organising the big event, including many volunteers, who can sign on at www.canberrahalf.com > VOLUNTEERS.
